A question worth asking

Is Your Joint Making Decisions for You Every Day?

Pain is only part of the picture. What matters just as much is what you have stopped doing, and how often you plan around the joint.

Seeing yourself here does not mean you need surgery. It may simply be time to get a clear answer.

  • A woman sits at her kitchen table with an open day planner and coffee, looking out the window

You plan your day around how the joint will feel.

  • From inside the front door, a man watches friends walk away down the sidewalk; his walking shoes sit unused by the door

You have started saying no to walks, trips, and invitations.

  • A weekly pill organizer and prescription bottles on a bedside table in lamp light; a hand reaches for the organizer

Injections and pain medications have become the new “normal.”

  • A man in nightclothes pauses at the bottom of the stairs at night, one hand on the banister and one on his knee

Sleep is interrupted, and stairs have become a negotiation.

Symptoms tell one part of the story. The joint tells another.

Dr. Patel brings together what you are feeling, what the examination finds, and what your imaging shows. Then you talk through the options together, including waiting.

Philosophy in Practice

The operation is one day. The work of getting back to your life begins before it and continues long after.

Technical skill is what makes the operation reliable when one is needed. Good care asks for more. It means listening carefully and choosing surgery for the right reasons. It also means preparing the whole person and building recovery around the life you want to return to.

RISE™ is the framework that turns good care into a plan.

The Anterior Approach

A muscle sparing way into the hip, designed to help many patients walk sooner and recover earlier with confidence.

This can be done through a traditional incision or the bikini-incision technique. Consult with Dr. Patel to see if you are a candidate.

  • Earlier Recovery
  • Same-Day for Most

The Subvastus Approach

A muscle sparing way into the knee: the inner thigh muscle is lifted and the surgeon works beneath it, leaving its tendon attachment alone.

It fits some knees and not others, and it is chosen for your anatomy. Consult with Dr. Patel to see if you are a candidate.

Your Journey Back

One clear plan, from first visit through recovery.

Care is organized around the questions patients actually have: what is wrong, what can help, what surgery would involve, and how recovery fits into real life.

  1. Evaluation

Listen, examine, review the imaging, and name what is actually going on in the joint.

  2. Preparation

Choose the right treatment, build strength, and ready your health and home.

  3. Surgery Day

When surgery is right, the approach and setting are matched to your candidacy.

  4. Recovery

Progressive movement, strength, sleep, nutrition, and follow-up support.

Most primary replacements at the surgery center are home the same day.

90%
of primary replacements go home the same day
5hrs
to discharge at the surgery center

In the practice’s own surgery-center data, about 90% of primary hip and knee replacements go home the same day, typically about five hours after surgery. Same-day discharge is a candidacy decision: your health, mobility, and support at home all have to fit. When staying overnight is safer, that is what happens.

It is still major surgery, and it carries real risks: infection, blood clots, stiffness, and the possibility of needing more surgery later. Those are discussed in full at your consultation.

In patients’ words

What Patients Have Said

Dr. Neel Patel is probably the best surgeon either my husband or I have ever had. He talked through all possible concerns and complications at length with my husband before he had his full hip replacement.

Kathleen G.5.0 ★ · March 2026, Google

Dr Patel is an outstanding ortho surgeon. He is encouraging, caring, and explains with excellence.

Jody W.5.0 ★ · January 2026, Google

He is very knowledgeable and thorough. He has an excellent bedside manner and makes me feel assured about what he is doing.

Dr Patel repaired my knee after my first surgery from another surgeon didn’t go well. … I wasn’t sure Id walk again. I am walking and returned to work!

He is a Dr. that cares about his patients and their well being.

My 95 year old mother had a fall and broke her femur by the ball joint of the hip. Dr. Patel was thorough in explaining to me what was going to be done surgically to repair the damage.

Dr.Patel fixed my 82 year old lawyer -husband’s hip after he tripped over a hose and broke it. He is an excellent surgeon with exceptional bedside manner.

I’ve been struggling with double knee pain for years. He sat down and thoroughly went over several ways I can get pain relief. He listened to me and I never felt rushed at any time.

Additional reviews

These are individual reviews, not a promise of typical results. Recovery and function after joint replacement vary widely; what is realistic for your joint is part of the consultation.

Common Questions Before Joint Replacement

Three that come up in almost every consultation. The rest are answered in more depth in the patient resources.

How do I know when it is time to consider joint replacement?

The X-ray is one input; the decision is made with you, not for you. The signals that matter: you plan your day around the joint, you have started declining walks and trips, and injections or medications are no longer holding the line. A consultation clarifies the options without committing you to surgery.

How long do hip and knee replacements last?

Most modern hip and knee replacements are still working twenty years on. Pooled registry data puts about 92% of modern total hips still in place at 30 years (Pentland et al., The Lancet, 2026) and about 82% of total knees still in place at 25 years (Evans et al., The Lancet, 2019). Dr. Patel would rather you asked the other version of this question, which is what your own chance of needing a revision is; that depends on your age, activity, weight, bone quality, and some luck, and no surgeon can promise a number for your joint.

Do I need a referral, and what insurance is accepted?

The practice works with most major insurance plans. Whether your plan is in network, including Medicare, and whether you need a referral both depend on your insurer; call the office and they will help you verify before the visit.
